The taste of Gosu and the warmth of glaze

blue flower

The Seika brand, produced by Shingama in Arita Town, Saga Prefecture, was born 40 years ago. Even now, we are particular about hand-painting and have created many vessels. Among them, the red-haired man is known as a representative motif. Its origins date back to the 17th century, when Arita ware exported to Europe through the Dutch East India Company contained a pattern called ``Kohate''. Attracted by its cuteness, it was born after repeated trial production with a painter from Shingama.

A brush that reaches the end of its lifespan in 60 days

There is always a sense of tension in the workplace, where the craftsman continues to stick to hand-painting, and the craftsmen hold their breath as they simply paint unglazed with a paint called Gosu, with a certain touch and a certain composition. The number of brushes exchanged throughout the year is 200. The tip of the brush is sharpened on the unglazed surface and will finish its purpose in about 60 days.

Secret gosu and glaze

Gosu is a raw material for paint. There is no limit to its color development. Aohana no Gosu was created through a unique blend that aims to create a deep blue color with the flavor of early Imari, which was made 400 years ago. It's not fancy, but has a nostalgic feel to it.

Stick to hand-drawing.

There is only so much hand-drawing you can do in a day. Arita ware is a production area that specializes in painting, but as time goes by, the number of hand-painted craftsmen is decreasing. Meanwhile, Aoka still continues to be made by hand-painting. This is because there is a unique quality to each piece that cannot be printed.

Because it's something you use every day

The Aoka pottery is slowly baked at a high temperature of 1300℃ over 3 days. Therefore, it is durable, hard to break, and can be used for a long time. Some of our favorite customers have been using the same small plates for over 20 years. One of the reasons why blue flowers are chosen is that they are both beautiful and functional.
