CHUNOMI
Drinking shochu
It all started with a challenge faced by CARAVAN Co., Ltd. at their shochu bar, "Shochu Tengoku Kinsei." They struggled with the fact that the taste of shochu mixed with hot water would vary depending on who prepared it—and despite trying every method, from temperature control to various warmers, nothing solved the issue. The answer they finally arrived at was the "shape of the vessel." Focusing on how shochu and hot water naturally circulate and mix within a cup, they devised a unique form that creates the ideal convection. Thus, "CHUNOMI" was born—a sake vessel that ensures a delicious result for anyone, simply by "pouring shochu into hot water."

Why mix it with hot water?
Oyuwari is a "soothing comfort" that satisfies both body and soul.
Over the past decade, shochu has changed significantly. With the rise of "shochu soda," it has gained widespread popularity among younger generations, and its world continues to expand boundlessly. For those of you who have discovered the joy of modern shochu, there is one way of drinking it that I want to share with you more than anything else right now: "oyuwari" (shochu mixed with hot water). If shochu soda offers refreshing "fun," oyuwari provides a "soothing experience" that satisfies both heart and body. The rich aroma that blooms with the warm steam, its exceptional compatibility with food, and the sense of relief the moment you take a slow sip, as if you were "soaking in a warm bath." This evening, why not try expanding your appreciation for the charms of shochu by starting with a warm cup?

Secret 1: Natural convection within the vessel
No stirrer needed
The unique design, featuring a delicately rounded bottom, allows hot water and shochu to blend naturally and perfectly without the need for stirring. By avoiding the use of a stirrer, the fragrance is allowed to open gently, maximizing the rich, natural aroma of the ingredients.
Secret ② A thick base that efficiently releases heat from the hot water.
To the ideal temperature
When making shochu with hot water, using water that is too hot, such as water that has just boiled, can intensify the sharp sting of the alcohol and cause the rich sweetness and depth of flavor to evaporate.
For this reason, the "Chunomi" was intentionally designed with a thicker base. By having the bottom of the vessel subtly dissipate the excessive heat of the freshly poured water, it naturally guides the shochu to its "ideal temperature"—where its flavors can fully bloom—without the need for any special tools.
Teachings from a shochu expert
How to make a delicious hot water split that anyone can do.
※This recipe was supervised by "Shochu Tengoku Kinboshi," a specialty shochu bar that maximizes the functionality of the Chu-Nomi.

Prepare shochu, a beaker, a shochu cup, and hot water.

Pour 90ml of hot water into a beaker.

Once the heat has been transferred thoroughly to the beaker and the temperature of the hot water has dropped slightly, pour the water into the sake cup.

While the beaker is still hot, pour your desired amount of shochu into it. Since the capacity of the shochu cup is 250ml, you can pour a maximum of 160ml of shochu after subtracting the 90ml of hot water. Please adjust the strength to your liking.

Once the heat from the beaker has transferred to the shochu, pour the shochu toward the center of the chonomi cup.

Wait 10 seconds for the convection to settle, and it's ready!

Male, 40s
Milder than usual
The smooth texture unique to porcelain is delightful, and from the moment I held it in my hand, I felt like a special time had begun. Perhaps thanks to the convection, the shochu I always drink felt milder than usual, and I found myself continuing to sip it without realizing it.

Enjoy hot water-diluted spirits in an elegant way.
I always had this impression that shochu was a bit "hard," and I didn't think it was for me. But these Chu-nomi cups have such a cute shape that makes them feel much more approachable. I felt that even women could enjoy hot shochu with water in an elegant way with these.

Feels good in the hand
I was a little worried that it might be too hot to hold once I poured hot water into it, but I was surprised to find it was actually fine when I tried holding it. The texture of the porcelain is also very pleasant, and before I knew it, I found myself drinking shochu with hot water more often.

I was skeptical, but...
To be honest, I was skeptical when I tried it. I didn't believe that the vessel could change the flavor. But the moment I took a sip, the sweetness tasted clearly different. Before I knew it, the 900ml bottle was empty (laughs).

It has a beautiful shape.
First of all, I fell in love with its beautiful form at first sight. I was a little worried about whether it would be stable since the base is small, but in reality, it’s not an issue at all. I really love its appearance and how it looks when placed somewhere.
